Andrea’s workshops are in her lovely custom-built stained-glass studio. Prior to the workshops I had no experience in working with glass whatsoever but was drawn to the ancient technique because of its history and beauty. At first, I was really nervous of cutting glass, but Andrea was a kind and thorough teacher. Overtime, I learned both copper foil and lead technique. Creating a stained-glass piece takes time and planning and I am delighted and proud of the colourful work I made. I am in love with the art deco style and geometric patterns and made this beautiful screen. I won’t forget the wonderful feeling when I saw the light shine through the screen, my first stained glass piece, it was truly magical. I am looking forward to using the panel as a summer fire screen.
I have been a regular guest at the wonderful glass workshop that Andrea has created for 4 years. It is a very enjoyable experience- the setting is fantastic with views of Galway Bay and the Burren as you approach and the custom made workshop is the perfect space to work on glass pieces. Andrea has created a relaxed and open environment where I work on my chosen projects but with her expert tuition and input when required. I thoroughly enjoy my time in the workshop- I love working with glass and creating pieces and the social interaction with Andrea and the other students. But more so I find it a practice in mindfulness, when I am in the workshop I don't think about anything else- work, worries and stress are left behind.
This year I embarked upon a series of copper foil pieces for external walls of my home- something to provide colour throughout the year. I can see them when seated inside my home or in the patio area outside- they make me smile and brighten up the view on even a dark wintery day. The sunflower was a pattern I copied from a stained glass pattern book but the pink and purple flower template was hand drawn by Andrea based on an inspiration piece I picked out online.
I purchased a home 3 years ago and set about creating lead pieces that would be both functional and aesthetically pleasing. I focused on mirrors and created a series which are now on proud display in my house- in the hallway, a bedroom and a bathroom. I love that my hobby which brings me so much joy is in use like this in everyday life.
